I used variable layer height: 0.35mm for the base and 0.05mm for the terrain.
This model is very prone to stringing, so I recommend lightly sanding it (yes I know my pictures are not sanded).
I retrieved elevation data from the SRTM 1 arc-second dataset from the USGS Earth Explorer. I converted it to STL with QGIS and the DEMto3D plugin. I then manually tweaked the mesh with Netfabb.
