This weapon exists in the universe I created for my book series Rocket Riders of the 27th Century. Books are available on Amazon, iBooks, Smashwords, Nook, Kobo, and through the websites of Barnes & Noble as well as Books-a-Million.
This design is intended to be "retro" even in-universe, as in the time the books are set there's still a lot of this older pulpsf looking stuff around, but there's also a decent bit of more contemporary gear and ships starting to appear.
The Baird Strategic pocket proton ray was marketed to colonial military forces during their uprising against Earth's control in the 26th century as an easy to conceal weapon that still packed enough punch to take down an enemy with a single shot.
It featured three settings; cutting beam, heat ray, and proton burst.
